The Extra Program is an educational sports experience created to give players an opportunity to play additional soccer. It is an accelerated program, played at a higher level, and in a more competitive environment, than our core program. However, the primary goals are the same---skill development of an individual and a team in a supportive environment. These must never be sacrificed to the goal of winning.
The Extra Program will be operated pursuant to these guidelines, and subject to the Area 3T Extra Program Guidelines.
The Extra Program is a secondary program, and where conflicts arise priority will be given to the Core Program. Any exceptions require approval of the Commissioner.
Players must participate in their Core Program practices and games. Failure to do so will result in the player being removed from the Extra Team.
Teams are formed for one year only. It should be made clear that there are no guarantees that Coaches or Players will be selected the following year. This is especially important for our young players to understand when they register their interest to participate.
With the size of our region the Extra Program will be run by a Coordinator and an Assistant. In order to effectively run the program it is recommended that one of these positions be filled by a volunteer with no child in the extra program.
PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The Extra Program follows AYSOs 5 philosophies, Everyone plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, and Good Sportsmanship.
Everyone plays.
A. All players are guaranteed to play 50% of each game (and half of each half).
B. It is recommended that all players have played three quarters before anyone plays a fourth quarter.
C. It is recommended that the starting rotation is changed for each game.
D. Though players may show an aptitude for one position, we believe it is in the best interest of player development that players continue to rotate.
E. Substitutions will be quarterly in AYSO competitions. In Non-AYSO competitions teams may substitute according to the rules of the competition, as long as every player still plays half of every game.
Open Registration.
Every player registered for the following years program, of appropriate age, will receive notice, through the Region website to register their interest in participating on an Extra Team. The limitations on the program are detailed later.
Balanced Teams.
Should there be more than one team in an age group, every attempt will be made to balance the teams.
Positive Coaching and Good Sportsmanship.
There is no difference between coaching an Extra Team and coaching in our Core Program. Coaches must be mindful that though the environment is more competitive than in the core program, they are responsible for maintaining a positive coaching position.
In addition, the players, coaches and parents on an Extra Team are the most visible representation of our Region, and reflect our image throughout the Area.
Divisions
We will attempt to form teams at each age level. This will be based on August1st-July31st cut off, as used by F.I.F.A and all major soccer organizations.
The only exceptions are:
A. At the introductory level (U9) where a child has been moved up in our Core Program due to advanced skill level, and the player is a minimum of 7 years old on July 31. In this case the player will be part of the U9 selection process for two years.
B. Where there is no team available for players to participate, all players of that age may register their interest to participate at the next age level. (Should a team form at the younger age the following year, players would then revert to playing in their appropriate Division).
Both these exceptions need approval of the Extra Program coordinator.
Coach & Referee selection
All individuals that would like to be considered as a coach/assistant coach in the Extra Program, please e-mail extrateams@ayso324.org and provide the following information:
- Level of AYSO training (U12 and
Safe Haven certification is required by September 1)*
- Previous coaching/assistant coaching experience
- Referee experience
- Other relevant experience
Coaches/assistant coach will be selected immediately after the registration period ends so they can have a role in the team formation process.
*Certification
All Extra coaches/assistant coaches, without exception, will be required to
complete U12 level training and Safe Haven before the season starts in
September. We will arrange courses in our region specifically for this purpose.
Not having proper certification will not keep you from being considered or selected. Those without proper certification on September 1, 2008 will be replaced immediately.
If you are chosen to coach/assistant coach, there might be additional certification requirements, such as refereeing, that you are required to take during the year. For now, Safe Haven and U12 are the core requirements.
Referee Selection
If your child is being
evaluated for Extra and you are a certified referee and would be available to
act as a referee at your child’s home games, please send an e-mail to
extrateams@ayso324.org indicating your interest in reffing, your child’s
name, gender and age group for the 2008-2009 season (e.g. U9, U10, etc…).
Limitations on selection
Our plan is to include as many committed players as possible. However, there are limitations to this that include having enough qualified Coaches, the availability of fields, and practical limitations on squad size.
Squad Size
7v7 A minimum of 9 players with a recommended maximum of 12.
9v9 A minimum of 11 players with a recommended maximum of 13.
11v11 A minimum of 14 players with a recommended maximum of 16.
The team formation process
The team formation process will take place at the end of the Spring season, usually in June.
Interested players must register through our website, at which time they will be asked to read details of the program. By registering, players acknowledge that they have read, and agree to the follow, the guidelines of the program.
The team formation committee
The team formation committee will follow regional guidelines.
The selection committee will ensure that each team has a qualified coach, assistant, and a referee.
Team formation
The extra program is run separately within the Region. It is important that all families know that they are expected to be actively involved in managing the team.
Before a team is certified to play in the fall, the following management roles must be filled:
The player roster and management team information must be filled out and submitted to the Extra Program Coordinator for approval. This is then sent to the Area Extra Program Coordinator for inclusion in the seasons schedule.
The Extra Program is self financed. The two largest costs are uniforms (if they decide not to use the Core Program uniforms), and tournaments. Judging from past experiences we estimate this will run approximately $100-$140, depending on the number of tournaments the team enters.
Dispute resolution
All disputes with regard to the program should be documented in writing to the extra Program Coordinator. Any matters that cannot be settled will then be forwarded to the Regional Dispute Resolution Coordinator.
